{"id":1476,"date":"2010-05-16T10:52:15","date_gmt":"2010-05-16T17:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=1476"},"modified":"2010-05-16T10:52:15","modified_gmt":"2010-05-16T17:52:15","slug":"native-or-noxious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=1476","title":{"rendered":"Native or Noxious?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1474\" style=\"width: 118px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1474\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1474   \" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_3267-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Native plant\u2014 Balsamorhiza deltoidea\" width=\"108\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_3267-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_3267-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_3267-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_3267-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 108px) 100vw, 108px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Native plant\u2014Nama sp.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">While the start of our internship has been limited to mostly office work, we have been quite busy preparing for the many field days that will require our forethought and ingenuity.\u00a0 Doug and I joined the Carson City field office in February as noxious weed technicians.\u00a0 We were immediately immersed into the BLM&#8217;s Integrated Pest Management Training where we not only learned about the numerous methods used to control pests, but also received our Pesticide Applicator Certification.\u00a0 Since our training, we have been joined by three other interns with four more yet to come&#8211;welcome interns!!!\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Over the past weeks, it has been enjoyable to see how the Seeds of Success Program can directly support the efforts of weed removal and restoration efforts.\u00a0 Specifically, any area infested with noxious weeds can be monitored, treated, and eventually re-vegetated using native seed collected from nearby populations.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div id=\"attachment_1488\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1488\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1488 \" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_31311-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Native plant\u2014 Balsamorhiza deltoidea\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_31311-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_31311-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Native plant\u2014 Balsamorhiza deltoidea<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Our first field days were spent learning to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles and identifying both the native and non-native plants covering the Nevada ecosystems.\u00a0 These species provide quite\u00a0the challenge as I am not from this area and am unfamiliar with most of them!\u00a0 Nonetheless, it has been an agreeable assignment to spend time discovering the tiny (0r BIG!) and beautiful plants that can handle the incredible temperature extremes and\/or highly alkaline soils.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve included a picture of two of the native species that we have encountered in the past few weeks: <em>Balsamorhiza deltoidea<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Nama<\/em> <em>sp.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 In upcoming weeks, we will continue to monitor the native and noxious species.\u00a0 Soon, we will be implementing control methods for the noxious ones.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">As I mentioned above, I am not from Nevada. I am from the Midwest, and my assumptions regarding Nevada&#8217;s climate were completely\u00a0shattered when I was greeted by eight inches of wet snow on my first day at work!
