{"id":21096,"date":"2013-02-05T09:34:57","date_gmt":"2013-02-05T16:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=21096"},"modified":"2013-02-05T09:34:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-05T16:34:57","slug":"goodbye-carson-city-blm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=21096","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye Carson City BLM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is unreal that this year has passed.\u00a0\u00a0 The newness of the office, projects, and my co-workers I felt last February has settled into familiarity and appreciation.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to believe that soon I will never sit at this desk again or type on this noisy keyboard.\u00a0 Thinking back, I am amazed at how much knowledge I gained and how much my team accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are many things I learned this year that I never expected. \u00a0I am so lucky to have attended all the trainings I did, from Identification of Grasses to Ecologically-Based Integrated Pest Management to Wetland Delineation.\u00a0 The classes were both challenging and helpful to my daily work and career development.\u00a0 Along with official trainings were conferences like the Nevada Rare Plant Workshop and ESR Lessons Learned, where I gained insight into the decision-making of the land management world.\u00a0 I know it\u2019s special to receive so much training in any job, and I appreciate my mentor advocating for the learning aspect of the internship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On top of formal trainings, I advanced greatly in my botanical and computer software knowledge.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to identify <em>Poa secunda<\/em> and <em>Eriogonum nummulare<\/em>, Latin names I had never seen before.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to dissect a seed pod and estimate the number of seeds on a plant; I find myself doing it on hikes outside of work.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to run a query in Access, and not-so-easy to perform data analysis in R.\u00a0 The skills I learned this year will be valuable to me for the rest of my career.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21097\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?attachment_id=21097\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21097\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21097\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21097\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-013-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-013-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-013-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-013-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-013-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Eriogonum diatomaceum<\/em>, the Churchill Narrows buckwheat, the little plant that defined much of my internship.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s great to think about next year\u2019s interns having learning experiences similar to mine and how far they will come over their months here.\u00a0 I hope they take advantage of the opportunities offered to them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On top of the education, I am proud of the projects my team accomplished.\u00a0 We made 208 seed collections, monitored 6 rare plant species and 7 fires, helped restore 3 riparian areas, and attended 10 outreach events.\u00a0 More than the numbers, however, I am proud of our perseverance and effort in accomplishing the tasks we were given.\u00a0 The year was not without challenge or mistake, and we have continued to work hard up until the very end.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21098\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?attachment_id=21098\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21098\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21098\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21098\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-0191-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-0191-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-0191-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-0191-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BLM-Botany-0191-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Interns in the sagebrush, a typical day-in-the-life.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the year, my appreciation for the beauty of Nevada has grown.\u00a0 I arrived here from the tropical rainforest of Australia and was shocked by the dryness of the landscape.\u00a0 Soon, I realized the uniqueness of the mountain range-valley, mountain range-valley landform pattern across the state.\u00a0 The plant community is resilient and has secrets hiding in the canyons.\u00a0 And when snow falls, the tan hills become shining white statues.\u00a0 It is a gorgeous state I would not have truly gotten to know without this internship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What a valuable year this has been.\u00a0 The CLM program is extremely beneficial to young professionals like me and I hope it continues for many years.\u00a0 As much I would like to linger here and develop my skills even further, I am happy to pass the torch to another botany intern here in Carson City.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is unreal that this year has passed.\u00a0\u00a0 The newness of the office, projects, and my co-workers I felt last February has settled into familiarity and appreciation.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to believe that soon I will never sit at this desk &hellip;
