{"id":2495,"date":"2010-07-10T20:44:48","date_gmt":"2010-07-11T03:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=2495"},"modified":"2010-07-10T20:44:48","modified_gmt":"2010-07-11T03:44:48","slug":"cheers-from-carlsbad-nm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=2495","title":{"rendered":"Cheers from Carlsbad, NM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been  working throughout different locations for the past year or so in  ecology jobs and so I have a comfortable routine of moving, readjusting,  and fitting into new environments.\u00a0 But as I drove into  New Mexico from the El Paso Airport I felt completely out of place.\u00a0  Where were the deciduous trees, grass, and oceans I had either  inadvertently or purposefully chosen to live near before?\u00a0 Everything  was foreign to me and I realized I was no longer in a place that I  personally felt connected too but instead was in a land I had only read,  seen pictures, or heard of. \u00a0At first everything seemed  vast, brown and desolate from the green rolling hills I was used to.\u00a0  But as I have started to work and explore New Mexico I am  continuously surprised on the habitat diversity, life, and sometimes  even lushness of the BLM land.<\/p>\n<p>While  working in the wildlife department for the first week I was like a kid  in a candy store.\u00a0\u00a0 Everything we saw was a first for me.\u00a0  First jack rabbit!\u00a0 First<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/CIMG1888.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2496 \" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/CIMG1888-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Aeshnidae spp.  While mist netting for bats we    caught a large number of otherwise rather net elusive dragonflies<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>roadrunner!\u00a0 First  antelope!\u00a0 And man oh man, the arthropods!\u00a0  Arthropods,  especially insects, are my study group of choice and the  diversity and  sheer size of some these animals in the desert is  astounding.\u00a0 I  have seen giant tarantula hawks that paralyze their  victims, burying  them underground with ferociously hungry, soon to  hatch eggs inside.\u00a0 Large  owl flies with furry faces, hundreds upon  hundreds of mating stick  insects, and my first scorpions. \u00a0Working for a   multiple-use agency is also new to me.\u00a0 After working for  Fish and  Wildlife and USGS I am used to wildlife and environmental needs  being  the first priority. \u00a0\u00a0But as land space becomes  scarce for both human  and wildlife,\u00a0 compromise and multiple use  sustainable practices are  going to become more common.\u00a0 The  BLM is a great place to learn how  different agents work together to  tackle this issue.<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/CIMG1883.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2498\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/CIMG1883-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Sunset at the Black River.
