{"id":32846,"date":"2013-08-20T12:16:36","date_gmt":"2013-08-20T19:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=32846"},"modified":"2013-08-20T12:16:36","modified_gmt":"2013-08-20T19:16:36","slug":"sos-and-searching-for-rare-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=32846","title":{"rendered":"SOS and Searching for Rare Plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">llo Curious Readers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This month, Carrie and I have been working on our main two tasks, collecting seed to use for the re-vegetation of the <a title=\"Rush Fire Info\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blm.gov\/ca\/st\/en\/info\/newsroom\/2012\/december\/rush_fire_seeding.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rush Fire<\/a> and monitoring <a title=\"BLM Special Status Plants\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blm.gov\/ca\/st\/en\/prog\/ssp.html\" target=\"_blank\">Special Status Plants<\/a>\u00a0(SSPs)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">. We searched for the <a title=\"Listing of I. webberi\" href=\"http:\/\/ecos.fws.gov\/speciesProfile\/profile\/speciesProfile.action?spcode=Q34J#candidate\" target=\"_blank\">candidate species<\/a> Webber&#8217;s ivesia, aka wire mousetail,\u00a0<em>Ivesia webberi<\/em>, at a location near Vinton, Ca, where it had been seen in the &#8217;90s. We unfortunately could not find it. When the wind blows on the seeds, it drives them into the soil. The hairs on the seeds are also very irritating&#8211;they feel like insulation.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_32872\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?attachment_id=32872\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32872\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32872\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32872\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0162-e1376684465816-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0162-e1376684465816-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_0162-e1376684465816-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Basin Wildrye, the large clumping grass in this picture, was growing mostly on the steep slopes of the valley wall, making collection a little challenging!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">We\u2019ve assisted in some other projects, too, which have proven to provide great field experience.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-style: normal; line-height: 24px;\">Last week Carrie and I helped Valda, Amy, one of our rangeland managers, and Derek, our rangeland supervisor, in completing surveys of AIM plots. I practiced my line-point intercept, canopy gap, and soil characterization while getting to experience the Horse Lake area in the cool, gray early morning.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">During the last week of July, Carrie and I assisted Missi, our wildlife biologist, Valda, our ecologist, Marilla and Sharynn, our archaeologists, and Clif, our fuels specialist, with a survey of the Jeffrey pine forest near Cleghorn Reservoir. The forest needs to be thinned to allow for saplings to grow and to prevent overly-destructive fires. But before treatment can occur, the units have to be surveyed for sensitive plant and animal species and habitat, archaeological artifacts and other aspects that could be damaged from the machinery and process of cutting down the trees.
