Gopherus agassizii- a little Buddha in a shell<\/p><\/div>\n

That is what I experienced one day being out in the field waiting for a tortoise to pass out of the dirt road we were traveling on. \u00a0The Desert Tortoise (<\/span>Gopherus agassizii<\/span><\/em>) is a threatened and sensitive species in the Mojave Desert. \u00a0We did not want to harass the tortoise, for it is unlawful to do so. \u00a0And why bother a creature like that? \u00a0They are adorable and could teach us humans a lesson in patience and humility. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am collecting seeds for tortoise forage plants, and they eat some interesting vegetation. \u00a0Would you like some desert trumpet <\/span>(Eriogonium inflatum)<\/span><\/em>? \u00a0Or how about some small wirelettuce <\/span>(Stephanomeria exigua)<\/span><\/em>? \u00a0Follow that with some tasty desert dandelion <\/span>(Malacothrix glabrata)<\/span><\/em> and voila! Tortoise dinner. <\/span><\/div>\n

There are plants out here I am very fond of. \u00a0One popular one is the Joshua Tree <\/span>(Yucca brevifolia)<\/span><\/em> and who would not like this plant? \u00a0Dr Seuss could have thought up this plant in one of his books. \u00a0Edward Abby had thoughts on yuccas too: <\/p>\n

Langloisia setosissima ssp. setosissima- best dinkaphyte ever<\/p><\/div>\n

I also like a few plants a friend termed as “dinkaphytes.” \u00a0These teeny tiny plants require you to get down on your hands and knees to see them. \u00a0My absolute favorite dinkaphyte is the liloc sunbonnet or Great Basin langloisia (Langloisia setosissima ssp<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> setosissima<\/span><\/em>). \u00a0This plant is the perfect combination of beauty and ferocity. \u00a0I mean, look at those spines! \u00a0It is lovely and rare- the perfect desert annual, and it fits in the palm of my hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently this spring has been kind to me with temperatures only breaking 100 F a few times in the past weeks. \u00a0I have been spoiled with this cool spring, according to my co-workers at the BLM. \u00a0They tell me not to worry, the heat will arrive soon. \u00a0Yikes- I hope I am ready for it, I feel groggy at 80 F, let alone above 100 F. \u00a0Was the desert a good choice in the summer? \u00a0Only time will tell.<\/span><\/div>\n
