{"id":53608,"date":"2013-12-09T08:48:33","date_gmt":"2013-12-09T15:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=53608"},"modified":"2013-12-09T08:48:33","modified_gmt":"2013-12-09T15:48:33","slug":"big-bear-lake-ca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=53608","title":{"rendered":"Big Bear Lake, CA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I arrived in Big Bear in mid-November from Minnesota.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 I\u2019d never been west of Montana or so, and so Utah, Nevada, and the Mojave Desert were new and very different.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 I camped near Moab and NE of St. George, and got to do some hiking along the way. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s extremely exciting to be in a region with such a high amount of plant diversity and endemism, and definitely not too late to do some winter botanizing (see <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Anisocoma acaulis<\/i>).<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 It\u2019s also interesting to see what different resource management issues botanists and biologists confront here compared with the Great Lakes region. <i><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the first week of my internship, I spent a day doing restoration work at Cactus Flats with USFS restoration staff and crews from Big Bear Lake and Riverside.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 We planted Joshua tree and matchweed, collected seed, and cleaned up fencing.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 This week a fellow intern and I went to the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont, CA and toured the herbarium, seed bank, greenhouse, and gardens.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 Along with those field days and several afternoons checking fuels treatments, I\u2019ve been reviewing and checking forest and regional plant lists, and generally reading and gathering resources.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 We\u2019ve also started work on a guide to invasive plant species of the San Bernardino NF, which may eventually include many non-native species that occur on other forests in southern California.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 There are already a lot of great resources about noxious weed species in California.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 However, as well as being forest-specific, this guide is intended to be very visual and accessible.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s great to be in Big Bear Lake and to have the opportunity to begin learning a new flora!
