We\u2019ve been doing surveys for TESW (Threatened, Endangered, Sensitive, and Watch plant species) along proposed OHV routes in the high desert, north of Big Bear Lake.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot blooming, and some hillsides have even taken on a yellow hue.<\/span>\u00a0 Sensitive species in the area include Mojave paintbrush (<\/span>Castilleja plagiotoma<\/i>, SBNF Sensitive) and Lemmon\u2019s syntrichopappus (<\/span>Syntrichopappus lemmonii, <\/i>SBNF Watch, middle).<\/span>\u00a0 We also did survey work at a mining claim nearer to the desert side of the forest. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In late March we attended a bryophyte foray near Santa Cruz, CA.<\/span>\u00a0 (My point-and-shoot isn\u2019t so well-equipped to take great pictures of mosses, especially in dim light, but I had a little\u00a0better luck with wild ginger, <\/span>Asarum caudatum, <\/i>top).<\/span>\u00a0 It was a wonderful opportunity to talk with some big names in the moss, liverwort, and hornwort worlds, and a good introduction to bryophyte keys.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
