{"id":54878,"date":"2014-05-06T12:20:12","date_gmt":"2014-05-06T19:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=54878"},"modified":"2014-05-06T12:20:12","modified_gmt":"2014-05-06T19:20:12","slug":"the-more-you-know-klamath-falls-fish-and-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=54878","title":{"rendered":"The More You Know: Klamath Falls Fish and Wildlife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the best and worst parts to starting a new project is just that, it\u2019s new.\u00a0 You really never know what to expect, which the creative and adventurous part of me loves but the overly organized part of me cringes at.\u00a0 I\u2019ve now been with the Fish and Wildlife Services office in Klamath Falls, Oregon for three weeks.\u00a0 I\u2019m working on a propagation project for the threatened shortnose sucker, <i>Chasmistes brevirostris. \u00a0<\/i>Which would be great, except we can\u2019t seem to find any!\u00a0 We\u2019ve been spending quite a bit of time out in the field just trying to track down individuals who are ready to spawn.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also been working on building floating docks and putting together other equipment which are going to be used to keep the fish alive once we catch them and put them in pens.\u00a0 These steps haven\u2019t come without their own issues of course.\u00a0 The docks don\u2019t seem to be able to handle the depth of water which we want to use them in, and some of the power tools I have at my disposal haven\u2019t been used in a few years, and don\u2019t seem to have any intention of coming out of their retirement!\u00a0 So improvisation and creative problem solving has been coming in handy, along with a few trips to the hardware stores.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54880\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54880\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54880\" alt=\"Future site of propagation pens.\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSCF0030.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Future site of propagation pens.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite this, or more likely because of it, I\u2019m having a great time and learning a lot.\u00a0 Not only am I putting my field work and research skills to use, but it\u2019s also great to see that people who have been working in this field for decades don\u2019t have all the answers and have to spend quite a bit of time trouble-shooting.\u00a0 Plus, I am learning how to collect fish using seine nets and cast nets, tag fish and use a tag reader to keep track of them, water quality monitoring equipment, and various other tools of the trade.\u00a0 I\u2019m also learning a lot about the history of the area as well as the native (and invasive) species of fish, birds, plants, and wildlife.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54879\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/023.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54879\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54879\" alt=\"Learning to throw a cast net.\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/023-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/023-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/023-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/023-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/023-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learning to throw a cast net.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, I\u2019ve started working on a project involving morphogeometrics.\u00a0 In short, we\u2019re trying to look at the shape and structure of different species of lake suckers and, using a computer image analysis program, determine if there are defining shape and structure features which can be used to identify different species.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it has been a great first few weeks.\u00a0 I am really enjoying all this job has to offer;
