We\u2019ve been doing surveys for carbonate endemics and other sensitive species at two mining claims, out towards the desert side of the forest.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot blooming right now, including the adorable borage above (<\/span>Pholisma arenarium<\/i>) and the federally endangered Cushenbury buckwheat (<\/span>Eriogonum ovalifolium <\/i>var. <\/span>vineum<\/i>).<\/span> \u00a0<\/i>I headed down to the chapparal for a backpacking trip over the weekend, for a taste of another part of the San Bernardino Mountains flora. <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n We finished surveys on the north side of the forest, as part of a project to close some unauthorized off-road vehicle routes, while designating others.\u00a0 Mojave paintbrush (<\/span>Castilleja plagiotoma<\/i>, pictured), a hemi-parasite on buckwheat and sagebrush, was one of our target species.<\/span>\u00a0 We\u2019ll be conducting surveys in the southeast part of the project area in May; since this area is at a higher elevation, the phenology is farther behind, and we\u2019ll be focusing on a different suite of species of species.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n In mid-April, we attended a Forest Service sponsored Poaceae workshop at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden.\u00a0 It was a great introduction to CA grass genera, grass morphology, and more difficult and subtle key steps and characters. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Mountaintop RD, US Forest Service<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Big Bear Lake, CA<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" We\u2019ve been doing surveys for carbonate endemics and other sensitive species at two mining claims, out towards the desert side of the forest.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot blooming right now, including the adorable borage above (Pholisma arenarium) and … Continue reading
