class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ash-gray Indian paintbrush (<em>Castilleja cinerea<\/em>), federally threatened<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve been surveying in the Santa Ana River Valley and along Sugarloaf Ridge, which is north of the valley.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 Sugarloaf Mountain and the surrounding ridges contain extensive pebble plain habitat.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 These open areas of clay soils are extremely harsh environments and are home to some unique plant species.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 Rare species of the pebble plains include ash-gray Indian paintbrush (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Castilleja cinerea<\/i>, federally threatened), southern mountain buckwheat <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0(<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Eriogonum kennedyi <\/i>var. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>austromontanum, <\/i>federally threatened), Bear Valley sandwort (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Eremogone ursina<\/i>), and Parish\u2019s rockcress (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Boechera parishii<\/i>, sensitive), among others.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 As part of the same project, I\u2019ve been working down in Barton Flats.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 Barton Flats horkelia (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Horkelia wilderae<\/i>) is a species endemic to this area of the Santa Ana River Valley, where it grows in montane conifer and oak woodland, often in openings or partial sun.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On August 31, we conducted night surveys for arroyo toad upstream of the Mojave Spillway.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 Arroyo toads are endemic to southwestern CA and northern Baja, and inhabit perennial streams.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 These nocturnal toads forage for insects at night and burrow themselves in sand during the day.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0This lower part of Deep Creek is heavily used, and beaver, trout, and bullfrogs also occur in the stream.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 All of these\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">impact arroyo toad populations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Interesting (plant) finds from last month include new populations of white adder\u2019s-mouth orchid (<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Malaxis monophyllos <\/i>var. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>brachypoda<\/i>)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i> <\/i>in two different meadows on the forest, and a new location of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Botrychium crenulatum<\/i>, also in a meadow.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 White adder\u2019s-mouth orchid has an interesting distribution in North America; it\u2019s primarily found in the Midwest and Canada, where it grows in swamp forests.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 The only records in California are from the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color:
