since 1962, there have been 134 reported cases in the US (CDC).<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 However, the survival rate from infection by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>N. fowleri <\/i>is very low; of those 132 cases, three (2.3%) have survived.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The presence of this ameba doesn\u2019t seem to deter the many people who soak in these hot springs. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One interesting find in the past few weeks was a possible location of <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Solorina spongiosa, <\/i>\u201cfringed chocolate chip lichen\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>.\u00a0 <\/i>This lichen has relatively large, brown, sunken apothecia (fruiting bodies), which are surrounded by a distinctive ring of green tissue.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 It has a worldwide distribution, but is rare in California.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve been continuing surveys in the Santa Ana River drainage, focusing on areas near roads and streams, and also monitoring older occurrences.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 One showy inhabitant of meadows and streams in this area is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>Sidalcea malvaflora <\/i>subsp. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><i>dolosa <\/i>(pictured).<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 We finished the invasive plant guide and will print this fall.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mountaintop Ranger District<\/p>\n<p>San Bernardino National Forest<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
