font-size: medium;\">We got the first winter storm of the season on Halloween night; mostly rain, but a bit of snow and sleet at higher elevations.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The photos in this post are from a (personal) backpacking trip I took down to the San Jacinto Mountains in mid-October.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from the village of Snow Creek.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This section of trail has gorgeous views of the steep, forbidding north face of San Jacinto Mountain and is also an interesting passage through different vegetation types.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The trail begins on the desert floor, dominated by creosote bush (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Larrea tridentata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">)\u00a0<\/span><i><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">and brittlebush (<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Encelia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">sp.), and winds up into\u00a0montane conifer woodland (with white fir, Jeffrey pine, and <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Quercus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">species).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have been doing a lot of database work, entering the season\u2019s finds into the Forest Service database.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Last week I helped our Restoration crew plant at one of our restoration sites.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I\u2019ve also been spending time in the herbarium, processing collections from this season and seasons past.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The herbarium work has turned up some interesting collections from this field season, including an intriguing <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Nama <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">species (more later, if it turns out to be something good).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Mountaintop Ranger District<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;
