parasites and hybrid blueberries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like summer has finally peaked here in New England! \u00a0The latter half of July brought some brutally muggy days with the occasional downpour, but these have since yielded to\u00a0mostly clear skies with temperatures in the low 80s for early August. \u00a0The plants are responding well to the recent good weather, and our endeavors are finally beginning to bear fruit, which have to date comprised 15 collections; of these, nearly half\u00a0are of the saltmarsh rush <i>Juncus gerardii<\/i>\u00a0(which, unfortunately, has a tendency to play host to a parasitizing moth,\u00a0<em>Coleophora alticollela).<\/em><i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>The remaining eight collections include false beach heather\u00a0<em>Hudsonia tomentosa<\/em>,\u00a0the sedges\u00a0<em>Carex scoparia,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Carex crinita<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Scirpus atrovirens<\/em>, and the delicious ericaceous shrubs\u00a0<em>Gaylussacia baccata\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Vaccinium angustifolium\u00a0<\/em>x\u00a0<em>myrtilloides<\/em>)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65249\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Naturally occurring lowbush x velvet blueberry hybrid (<em>Vaccinium angustifolium x myrtilloides<\/em>), Wapack NWR, New Hampshire<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the course of our collections thus far, we have voyaged as far north as Waterville, ME, to scout out the maturity of seeds borne by\u00a0black spruce (<em>Picea maritima<\/em>) and purple pitcher plant\u00a0(<em>Sarracenia purpurea<\/em>) in kettlehole bogs, east to Harwich Port on Cape Cod to collect\u00a0<em>Carex scoparia<\/em>, and southwest to Stonington, CT to assess dam removal sites.
