You have many names,<\/p>\n

and have taken many lands.<\/p>\n

When a band of horses turns the earth,<\/p>\n

when a herd of cattle lingers at water,<\/p>\n

when a fire sweeps through the sagebrush,<\/p>\n

in the bare earth<\/p>\n

you spring up<\/p>\n

first and foremost,<\/p>\n

claiming every inch of space,<\/p>\n

cutting in line,<\/p>\n

and unwilling to share.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You are the earliest bird<\/p>\n

who gets the worm,<\/p>\n

steals the land.<\/p>\n

Establishing a blockade,<\/p>\n

the natives can not grow,<\/p>\n

and you are free to thrive.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You weave yourself<\/p>\n

into my socks,<\/p>\n

and poke my ankles<\/p>\n

when I’m trying to work.<\/p>\n

Fire monitoring drags on<\/p>\n

when I cannot see<\/p>\n

stunted perennials<\/p>\n

through your shadow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sometimes,<\/p>\n

in the evening light,<\/p>\n

you glow<\/p>\n

and sway in the breeze,<\/p>\n

and I forget<\/p>\n

you are so terrible,<\/p>\n

so pervasive,<\/p>\n

and for this short moment<\/p>\n

I enjoy your presence.<\/p>\n
