{"id":75065,"date":"2017-04-28T13:18:57","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T20:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=75065"},"modified":"2017-04-28T13:18:57","modified_gmt":"2017-04-28T20:18:57","slug":"almost-a-different-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=75065","title":{"rendered":"Almost a Different World"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Almost a\u00a0Different World<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I look at a picture of the world,\u00a0my eyes first go to North America&#8230; from there they instantly land on \u00a0the Midwest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I favoring them? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course. Why? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, I am from there. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had never stepped foot into the Rocky Mountains before this internship and have only thought of Utah in passing. I would say in my entire life, the amount of times I\u2019ve \u00a0thought of Utah could fit on my entire hand&#8230;. With fingers still missing. These \u201cthoughts\u201d \u00a0most commonly occurred when I was forced to learn how to spell all the states and their capitals in school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> U-T-A-H, S-A-L-T \u00a0L-A-K-E \u00a0C-I-T-Y. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vernal, Utah\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, crossed my mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I was used to Chicago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flat land, the corn fields, the paved roads. I had more stores than I could handle in a walking distance of me and a sky full of stars (or what I thought was full). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, I was going to a small town. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With one main road, the store of choice a Walmart, and an apartment I had only seen in pictures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say I was nervous to start at the BLM in Utah would be an understatement. To say I was ready for the adventure, would be right on point. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">And So the Adventure Begins . . .<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could go into detail about the excitement of the first day. The adventures of finding a fax machine and the drama of getting a working phone, (I took a cord from an empty cubicle). Heck, I could even tell you that my turkey sandwich had a sense of dream-like quality because it was so delicious after being nervous all morning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I won\u2019t. Why? Because my second day was much, much, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more exciting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually went into the Mountains. To work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75067 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-4-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four of us traveled\u00a0into the Rocky Mountains to look for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sclerocactus wetlandicus<\/span><\/i><b><i>. <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This cactus is considered a sensitive plant species of the Vernal Field Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75068 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-1-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Into the mountains, we went for a 2-hour truck ride to our designated location. Through oil pads, natural gas burns, and muddy roads I started to wonder\u2026. Am I really going to like it? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The view was worth all its&#8217; weight in gold. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75069 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-5-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I honestly couldn\u2019t believe that this internship allowed me to be out in the Rocky\u2019s looking for cacti. Literally, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out in the Mountains<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not stuck behind a desk looking at the hills from the window. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75072 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-3-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What I Actually Did<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a rundown version of what we did. We got in arm\u2019s length of each other and walked hundreds of feet in each direction of our parked truck. Throwing down flags and keeping our eyes peeled for this cacti. Was it to be expected that we would find one? Nope. Yet, I couldn\u2019t help to think we would (&#8230;. we did not).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75070 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_2314-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_2314-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_2314-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_2314.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, my time was spent looking at the ground, making sure I didn\u2019t miss this plant. But just the air, the rocks under my feet, and the cloud laden sky made this a wonderful experience. Even when the weather changed in a split second. From cloudy mornings, to snowy lunch breaks, then finally landing on the hot blazing sun. I prepared for all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>I saw feral horses. No, (it\u2019s not what you think), these horses are not wild but actually invasive. Left to the environment by their owners, these horses have survived and are now eating and trampling upon very important plant species.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75071 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-1-600x594.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-1-600x594.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-1-303x300.jpg 303w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spent my day happy to be outdoors. In mountains (of all places)&#8230; where it felt and looked like I had landed in a different world.
