{"id":75710,"date":"2017-06-23T12:56:41","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T19:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=75710"},"modified":"2017-06-23T12:56:41","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T19:56:41","slug":"may-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=75710","title":{"rendered":"May 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I never cease to be amazed at how different a rich forest habitat can look from spring to summer.\u00a0 Rock outcrops on slopes of these areas that once stood out as clear as could be in spring are often covered in thick herbaceous level growth by this time of year.\u00a0 Unfortunately in some cases this is because an invasive plant such as Garlic Mustard has reached maturity in such numbers as to obscure the ground level.\u00a0 Native undergrowth in more stable areas can achieve the same effect.\u00a0 I have been spending a fair amount of time surveying in cool, shaded, north-facing forests associated with limestone rock outcrops recently.\u00a0 One of my priority target species, <em>Arabis patens<\/em>, occurs here.\u00a0 The genus Arabis, and the Brassicaceae family in general, can be a difficult group of plants to identify. \u00a0Recent taxonomic treatments have placed some species previously found in Arabis into other genera such as Boechera, Borodinia, and Arabidopsis.\u00a0 This only adds to the difficulty.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75720\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0870-e1496292845833.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75720\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-75720 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0870-e1496292845833-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0870-e1496292845833-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0870-e1496292845833-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0870-e1496292845833-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Arabis patens<\/em> (Spreading Rockcress)<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_75722\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1712-1-e1496293025242.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75722\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-75722 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1712-1-e1496293025242-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1712-1-e1496293025242-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1712-1-e1496293025242-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1712-1-e1496293025242-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Arabis patens<\/em> (Spreading Rockcress) This picture shows the fruit, sub-entire to entire middle cauline leaves, dentate lower cauline leaves and the smaller basal leaves. The out of focus plant next to them is a Twinleaf seedling.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Some other species I\u2019ve recently encountered in rich woods, although not necessarily in north-facing limestone associated forests, were <em>Viola canadensis<\/em>, <em>Maianthemum racemosum<\/em> and state-listed <em>Panax quinquefolius \u00a0Panax quinquefolius<\/em> (Ginseng) is a well-known plant in the Appalachian region. \u00a0Because of its commercial value it has been extensively harvested throughout its range.\u00a0 \u00a0This exploitation has earned it a G3G4 global ranking from NatureServe.\u00a0 I find this plant\u2019s foliage quite attractive and its presence in an area usually indicates the habitat is stable and possibly high quality.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75713\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1581.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75713\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-75713 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1581-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1581-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1581-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1581-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1581-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Viola canadensis<\/em> (Canada Violet) This species can reach over two feet in height.
