{"id":77256,"date":"2017-09-03T16:10:01","date_gmt":"2017-09-03T23:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=77256"},"modified":"2017-09-03T16:10:01","modified_gmt":"2017-09-03T23:10:01","slug":"july-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=77256","title":{"rendered":"July 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While doing some research on the land-use history of one section of the park I came across some interesting information and photos.\u00a0 Our park keeps physical documents of the land acquisition transactions that took place when tracts were being bought and added to the canal boundary.\u00a0 Among these records were appraisals.\u00a0 These appraisals included timber values and documentation of all structures on a tract of land.\u00a0 The timber appraisals even listed the number of trees over 14\u201d dbh and the species, although it wasn\u2019t always specific for some groups like maples and ash.\u00a0 You could get a rough idea of the character of the forest at that time.\u00a0 Pictures of structures were also included.\u00a0 They were meant to document the structure only but some photos showed the surrounding landscape.\u00a0 These photos and maps helped show the extent of disturbance during that time period.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_77262\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_2647.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77262\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-77262 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_2647-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_2647-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_2647-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_2647-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_2647-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-77262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the seasonal\/recreational structures found along the Potomac River. When the National Park Service obtained these properties most of these structures were removed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I assisted a contract botanist with his survey on canal lands this month.\u00a0 I always find it interesting to talk with botanists in the private sector about their experiences.\u00a0 We had a successful couple of days surveying and found 6 new rare plant records for that portion of the class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from atop one of the bluffs that was surveyed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the plants we found was a new species for the park.\u00a0 Aristolochia macrophylla is listed as imperiled (S2) for the state of Maryland.\u00a0 The synonym for it is Isotrema macrophyllum.\u00a0 Previous records for this plant in Maryland are from Garrett and Allegany counties.\u00a0 This plant was found in Washington County which borders Allegany County.\u00a0 After reading up on this plant I found out that is or was planted widely as an ornamental.\u00a0 This information and the fact that the vines I found were near a lock and next to a pile of gravel, lead me to believe that this occurrence is probably an escaped population.\u00a0 \u00a0I ran into a similar situation with Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) which is a state-listed tree but widely planted in the area.\u00a0 I will include all this information in my records and still map the occurrence for the park\u2019s database.\u00a0 I also plan to reach out to the state botanist to get his opinion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_77259\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">I didn&#8217;t get to catch this one in flower but I wish I did after reading this.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lastly, I found this cool looking Sphinx Moth (Eumorpha pandorus) on a Hackberry (Celtis occidnetalis) leaf along the canal towpath.\u00a0 I also found an early-instar Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) caterpillar on the leaf of the state-listed (MD) shrub, Hop tree (Ptelea trifoliata).\u00a0 \u00a0The Giant Swallowtail is a state-listed butterfly in Maryland and I was glad to finally sight one.\u00a0 The caterpillar\u2019s strategy of disguising itself as bird poop is really interesting in my opinion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_77257\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a
