{"id":79089,"date":"2017-12-21T10:50:37","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T17:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=79089"},"modified":"2017-12-21T10:50:37","modified_gmt":"2017-12-21T17:50:37","slug":"winter-reflections-and-warm-goodbyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/?p=79089","title":{"rendered":"Winter Reflections and Warm Goodbyes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-79091\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3855-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3855-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3855-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3855-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3855-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>When people ask me how my internship has been, there is always a moment of fraught silence as I wrestle for a place to even begin. \u00a0How can you give a glib watercooler answer about an eternity of grass, silence so deep that only the gulls and ospreys dare break it? \u00a0To hours and hours pouring over hundreds of species of plants, becoming intimately aware of their endless variations? \u00a0The carefully nurtured, by now almost instinctive reflex to look for diagnostic characteristics in grasses and sedges that had you in tears six months ago? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-79093 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3370-e1513709976697-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3370-e1513709976697-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3370-e1513709976697-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3370-e1513709976697-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of the past few months I\u2019ve learned that unexpected beauty can be found everywhere. \u00a0I didn\u2019t anticipate finding much in the sense of wild spaces in the history laden, densely settled northeast coast, but New England continued to surprise in how resilient it\u2019s natural areas continue to be, as well as how passionately the region\u2019s residents will defend these spaces. \u00a0Five miles from a drag race track, in an old ATV area, \u00a0we found one of the most botanically biodiverse sites on our collection list. \u00a0A barren, at risk mudflat in one of our estuaries exploded into greenery and yielded more than fifteen collectable species. \u00a0In the the saltmarsh we took careful steps as native grasses sheltered nests of baby birds and mice, the only indication of their presence a quiet chirp or squeak that would startle us as we worked. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although at first I was intimidated by how many private landowners we had to work with, I soon found the people of New England to be not only accommodating, but also genuinely interested in the work we did. \u00a0Email inquirires would be answered with offers of maps, inventories and other potential locations. \u00a0Passerby would stop to ask us questions and suggest other parks they knew about when they found out what we were doing. \u00a0Even when apprehensive park visitors called the rangers on us while we were doing permitted work it was, in it\u2019s own way, refreshing &#8211; people were invested in their local ecosystems. \u00a0They were proactive in learning about what was happening to them, what kind of work was being done, and in the event of a perceived threat, were willing to call authorities &#8211; never have I felt the bystander effect to be so lacking. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To answer the question I began with, to any who might still be wondering &#8211; this internship has been a summer of change, of personal growth, frustration, victories, and quiet, meaningful, beautiful moments where I\u2019m suddenly made all too aware of how very precious these places are, and how worthy they are of our care and support. \u00a0A sentiment that\u2019s a bit heavy to carry back from the watercooler perhaps, but one I hope will refresh and satisfy nonetheless.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-79094\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-clm-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3169-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3169-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3169-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3169-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.clminternship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_3169-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When people ask me how my internship has been, there is always a moment of fraught silence as I wrestle for a place to even begin. \u00a0How can you give a glib watercooler answer about an eternity of grass, silence &hellip;
